Teeth whitening: methods, results and how long it lasts

· Dr. Imad Al Morabit

A straightforward guide to brighter teeth: what really works, what to watch for and what you can realistically expect.

In-office whitening versus home kits

Teeth whitening can be done in several ways, and the difference mainly comes down to the concentration of the product and the supervision involved. In the office, a higher, controlled concentration is used after we check your gums and enamel. This makes the process faster and more even, with less risk of patchy areas.

Over-the-counter kits from a pharmacy or online use weaker products and trays that don't fit your teeth. They can lighten slightly, but results are less predictable and the gel can spill onto the gums. A middle option is home whitening with custom trays made by the dentist: you do it yourself, but with a safe system and the right dosage.

Worth knowing: whitening only works on natural teeth. Fillings, crowns and veneers do not change shade. If you have a lot of visible dental work, we first look together at which approach makes the most sense for you.

Safety, sensitivity and how long it lasts

Whitening is safe when it is done on healthy teeth and gums. That is why an examination always comes first at our practice: cavities, inflamed gums or exposed tooth necks are treated beforehand. Whitening over an underlying problem solves nothing and can cause discomfort.

Temporary sensitivity to cold or hot is the most common side effect, usually mild and short-lived. With the right dosage, breaks and a desensitising gel, it stays well under control. We never promise a guaranteed shade in advance: how much your teeth brighten depends on your starting colour and the cause of the discolouration.

The result is not permanent. Coffee, tea, red wine, soft drinks and smoking gradually bring the colour back. On average, a good result lasts several months or longer, depending on your habits and maintenance.

Who it suits and how to keep the result

Whitening suits people with healthy teeth who want to lighten their natural shade. It is less suitable, or not advised, during pregnancy and breastfeeding, with severe sensitivity, or for discolouration coming from inside the tooth. In those cases we look at alternatives, and sometimes veneers or crowns make more sense than whitening.

To keep the result, limit strongly colouring drinks or sip them through a straw, brush well and do periodic top-ups with your trays. Quitting smoking has by far the biggest effect.

Frequently asked questions

Does teeth whitening hurt?

Usually not. Some people feel temporary sensitivity to cold or hot that goes away on its own. With the right dosage and a desensitising gel, it stays well controlled.

How long will my teeth stay white?

It varies from person to person. On average, a good result lasts several months or longer, depending on your diet, smoking and maintenance. Top-ups with trays extend the effect.

Will my fillings and crowns also become whiter?

No. The product only works on natural tooth tissue. Existing dental work does not change shade, which is why we agree together on what is realistic before starting.
