I have an abscess or a swollen cheek, what should I do?
A dental abscess is a build-up of pus caused by an infection, often around the root of a tooth or in the gum. Typical signs are throbbing pain, a swollen cheek or gum, a bad taste and sometimes fever. An abscess does not clear up on its own and always needs treatment by the dentist.
While you wait for your appointment, gently rinse several times a day with warm salt water, which can relieve the area a little. Apply a cold pack against the cheek and keep your head slightly raised at night. Never try to pierce or drain the abscess yourself. Do not take antibiotics on your own initiative, as they must be prescribed by a doctor or dentist.
Certain signs call for immediate emergency care: swelling of the face or neck that increases quickly, difficulty swallowing or breathing, being unable to open the mouth, or a high fever. In these cases do not wait and go straight to the hospital emergency department.
