Do veneers damage your teeth? How much do they have to be filed down?
This is one of the most important questions to ask before committing to veneers, and the honest answer is that it depends entirely on the technique used. Traditional preparation involved significant filing that permanently altered healthy teeth. Modern minimally invasive dentistry has changed that completely, and at our clinic it is the only approach we use.
For ceramic veneers, preparation is usually limited to a thin layer of enamel on the front surface of the tooth, often less than 0.5 mm. In some cases, particularly when the tooth is already slightly set back or the desired result involves adding volume, ultra-thin veneers can be placed with almost no preparation at all. The exact amount depends on your starting point and the final shape you want to achieve, which is determined during the mock-up phase before any drilling takes place.
You may have seen images online of patients whose teeth were filed into small pegs before veneers were placed. This over-preparation is unnecessary, irreversible, and leaves the tooth dependent on the crown for structural support indefinitely. It is sometimes called the Turkey teeth effect, though it can happen anywhere. We consider it poor practice, and we make our preparation standards transparent to every patient from the first appointment.
Preserving your enamel is not just an aesthetic concern. Enamel is the natural barrier that protects your teeth from sensitivity and decay. Keeping as much of it as possible means your teeth remain healthier for longer, whether or not you ever need to replace the veneers in the future.
