Can you eat and drink with clear aligners in?
Clear aligners must be removed before eating any food. This is one of the fundamental rules of aligner treatment and one that protects both your trays and your teeth. Chewing with aligners in can crack or deform the plastic, shortening the life of the tray and potentially disrupting the planned movement. It also traps food particles between the tray and your teeth, which creates an ideal environment for bacterial growth and increases the risk of cavities.
The same applies to most drinks. Plain cold or lukewarm water is the only safe option with aligners in. Hot drinks can warp the plastic material and change the tray's shape. Sugary drinks, fruit juices, coffee, tea, and fizzy drinks all carry a risk of staining the trays and allowing sugar or acid to sit against your tooth surfaces for extended periods. The result is discoloured trays and a higher cavity risk, neither of which you want.
In practice, the routine is straightforward: remove the trays before a meal, eat normally, rinse your mouth, clean the trays briefly, and put them back in. Most people adapt to this within a few days and stop thinking about it as an inconvenience. Keeping the tray case with you at all times makes it easy to remove and store them hygienically when eating out.
One thing to keep in mind is that the two to four hours per day spent eating and drinking count toward the time the trays are out. If meals run long or you snack frequently throughout the day, it is easy to unintentionally exceed the two-hour limit. Aiming to put the trays back in promptly after meals helps keep total wear time within the recommended twenty to twenty-two hours.
