My tooth is broken or fractured, what should I do?
A tooth can break from a fall, a knock or biting on something hard. Start by gently rinsing your mouth with warm water to remove fragments and blood. If you find the broken piece, keep it in a little milk or in saline solution, as in some cases the dentist can reuse it.
If the fracture leaves a sharp edge that irritates your tongue or cheek, cover it temporarily with sugar-free chewing gum or with orthodontic wax from the pharmacy. If there is bleeding, press for a few minutes with a clean gauze. A cold pack against the cheek reduces swelling and pain.
Whether the break looks small or large, always have the tooth checked. A simple chip can hide an exposed nerve, and an untreated fracture risks becoming infected. The sooner you are seen, the greater the chance of saving the tooth.
