My crown or filling has come out, what should I do?
A crown or filling can come out through wear of the cement or by biting on something hard. It is annoying but rarely an acute emergency. Carefully keep the crown that came out in a small box, as the same crown can often be re-cemented by the dentist, which saves time and cost.
The tooth underneath may now be sensitive to hot, cold and sweet, because its protection is missing. Chew on the opposite side and keep the area very clean with gentle brushing. Never use household glue or superglue to stick the crown back yourself, as these products are toxic and damage both tooth and crown.
Pharmacies sell a temporary dental cement that can hold a loose crown for a few days until your appointment, but this is only a stop-gap. A tooth without protection is more prone to fracture and decay, so do not put off the repair for long.
