What is a root canal treatment and when is it needed?
Each tooth holds a soft tissue at its centre with nerves and blood vessels, called the pulp. When this pulp becomes inflamed or dies, due to deep decay, a crack or an old leaking filling, pain or an infection appears at the tip of the root. In a root canal treatment the dentist cleans the inside of the tooth, removes the diseased tissue and seals the canals tightly. This stops the infection and lets you keep your natural tooth.
Treatment becomes necessary when the nerve is permanently inflamed or damaged. This often follows decay that has grown too deep, a knock or accident, repeated procedures on the same tooth, or an infection that has already reached the root tip and formed an abscess.
The goal is always the same: remove the pain, treat the infection and keep the tooth rather than extract it. A well performed root canal can last many years, often a lifetime, especially when the tooth is properly protected afterwards.
