Root canal

Root canal or having the tooth extracted?

Faced with an infected tooth, you sometimes hesitate between treating it or having it pulled. In most cases keeping your natural tooth is the better option. No artificial solution works exactly like a natural tooth, and your own tooth holds the jaw and neighbouring teeth in place.

Pulling a tooth may seem quicker, but it leaves an empty space. Neighbouring teeth can then drift and the opposing tooth can over-erupt. To fill the gap later you often need an implant or a bridge, which generally costs more time and money than keeping the tooth.

Sometimes a tooth truly cannot be saved, for example with a deep vertical fracture or when too little healthy structure remains. In that case extraction is the honest choice, and we calmly look together at how best to restore the space.
