My temporary crown has fallen off, what should I do?

A temporary crown, also called a provisional crown, is a resin crown placed on a prepared tooth to protect it while the final crown is being made. It is fixed with a deliberately weak cement so that it can be removed easily, which is why it comes off more often than a final crown: when chewing something sticky or hard, or when floss is pulled upwards instead of slid out sideways.

It is not an acute emergency, but do not let it drag on. The prepared tooth is exposed and may become sensitive to hot, cold and sugar. Above all, the neighbouring and opposing teeth can shift slightly within a few days, and the final crown, already in production, may then no longer fit. Retrieve the temporary, rinse it and, if you have to wait overnight or over a weekend, put it back with temporary dental cement from a pharmacy or a small dab of toothpaste, never with household glue, which is toxic and impossible to remove cleanly. Chew on the other side and avoid sticky foods.
